When I was in high school, Guiteau was always described briefly in an apposite clause as "a disgruntled office-seeker," which profoundly undersells his sociopathic madness. Furthermore Garfield didn't have to die; his doctors didn't believe in the germ theory of disease.

Finally, and least known: Garfield was a great man, who might have been a truly great President. He's a trivia question now, but read up on his life prior to attaining the presidency. We can never know what we lost. Arthur honored his memory by passing civil service reform.
