The assassination of James Garfield is one of those moments in U.S. history that is forgotten about these days as a factoid but is a genuine tragedy and absolutely fascinating in all respects.https://twitter.com/janecoaston/status/1417145472662265862 …

I'm transitioning from a Tudor history wormhole to a history of neurology wormhole which leads me to this article and to the fact that Charles Guiteau was not in tip top mental shape. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2015/10/this-is-the-brain-that-shot-president-james-garfield/454212/ …

When I was in high school, Guiteau was always described briefly in an apposite clause as "a disgruntled office-seeker," which profoundly undersells his sociopathic madness. Furthermore Garfield didn't have to die; his doctors didn't believe in the germ theory of disease.

Finally, and least known: Garfield was a great man, who might have been a truly great President. He's a trivia question now, but read up on his life prior to attaining the presidency. We can never know what we lost. Arthur honored his memory by passing civil service reform.

Based on the mentions, I guess I really ought to read "Destiny of the Republic."

Somebody once said that it was like Lex Luthor becoming President - and then fixing it so that nobody else could do what he did.

it's either the "rectal feeding" or the "asking for $25K for treating Garfield" that really does it for me regarding his doctor

The Alexander Graham Bell cameo in the horrific medical saga floored me when I read about it in this fantastic book by @candice_millard. Strongly recommend it! https://www.mcnallyjackson.com/book/9780767929714 …
