It's gonna be wild if Garcia closes the gap.https://twitter.com/Taniel/status/1409958667139436548 …

Remember: Adams received over 10% more first-choice votes than either Wiley (22%) or Garcia (19%). Some people are going to be howling. Me, I'm just happy to be living in Chicago, where we've stopped caring about the Mayoral race at all because we know we're all doomed anyway.

One of the reasons I firmly oppose to RCV is because, while its acolytes argue it "maximizes choice and utility!" I understand voters the way most voters (not RCV wonk nerds) really are: they usually have *AT MOST* one candidate they support, then don't know much about the rest.

The RCV ballot doesn't "maximize democratic choice," it maximizes ignorance. Forcing a choice (fine, have a run-off if nobody gets to 50+1) not only clarifies outcomes, it tracks w/how humans, who are not perfectly rational spreadsheet quants, handle political choices and info.

This guy (who is almost too perfect an example of the hothouse ignorant 'wannabe quant' attitude I'm talking about, he even has "acela" in his handle!) accidentally proves my pt: you really think 80% of voters were super-informed about picks #2-5?https://twitter.com/CamtrakAcela/status/1409978692487593990 …

Of course not. But, given the opportunity (not a compulsion, but we as humans are easily led along like mules by suggestive offerings) to rank the rest, they'll just start picking names capriciously. B/c all they REALLY know is their top pick, and maybe who they like least.

Speaking dispassionately: what's entertaining me are all the people starting to say "Look, it works, NYC's just screwing it up..."
-
"Real ranked choice voting has never been tried..."

It will be great that the first high-profile use of RCV clearly shows its potential. Would have been worse if the person with a 10% lead among first place votes ended up winning the runoff by 10%. People would say "what was the point?"

Yeah that would definitely save Adams then.
