Nobody will admit this, but the preferred solution from most on the Left is "let them loose in the country and who cares if they come back for their hearings to (almost certainly) be deported or abide by immigration law." And this of course is the problem.https://twitter.com/neontaster/status/1143492705932193792 …

And furthermore, combo of "let them all free if they cross the border" plus "ABOLISH ICE" is the final tell: the preferred policy here on activist Left, unstated but easy to grok, is "if you manage to get across the border you get to stay here, forever, until the next amnesty."

You may be fine with that; I am not.

But the vast majority (89%) do come back for hearings, so perhaps that is the best solution.

From any of the reports I've seen, at least with respect to asylum seekers, that actually works though. Are we going by evidence here or feelings?

How about increased funding for asylum hearings and some streamlining for people from areas we know to be dangerous

In addition to already-high rates of showing up, programs that provide access to lawyers or counselors increase it even further. Having an orderly process and reducing chaos goes a long way. Unfortunately, the admin only values shows of force against the vulnerable.

Or we could go back to the pilot program Trump canceled. Case workers and electronic monitors.

The other point that needs to be highlighted is the cruelty isn’t a bug. It’s a feature. This administration has repeatedly said through words and actions that cruelty is a an appropriate form of deterrent. Not all these problems are as simple as a lack of resources.

Most of the data I’ve seen on this shows 9 in 10 show up for their hearings. Could we not invest in a system to close that gap further instead of spending to detain them? You are right that funding for better detention facilities is a terrible answer

Also seen articles that suggest increasing international aid to CA countries where the migrants are coming from to make it less likely folks make the trek at all
