I still remember when PENNY POWER (this was a 'consumer reports' type magazine for pre-teens!) published a negative review of R.E.M.'s OUT OF TIME in early 1991 and then had to print a retraction one issue later due to kids angrily writing in. First time I really got into them.

In high school, the mags were WEEKLY STANDARD (R.I.P.) and THE AMERICAN SPECTATOR (my parents went from really left-wing to really right-wing so fast it made your head spin). We also subscribed to NEWSWEEK and TIME but, eh, meh. By senior year the big highlight was THE ECONOMIST.

Oh, and I almost forgot: BECKETT BASEBALL MONTHLY was something my brother and I would get into kid-fights over when it arrived in the mail...remember the baseball card bubble? My 1991 Topps Stadium Club "Phil Plantier" card was worth $11! I know because it said so in Beckett!
