Here, I’ll say the honest thing: before I was diagnosed I thought it meant you were stupid or lazy, or both. After diagnosis my doctor said “it’s how your brain is wired, and it’s just different. Your brain works differently. Better than average in some ways, worse in others.”

I don’t like the word “stupid”, I have a strong visceral reaction to it. But that reaction is what I associated with ADHD before I knew I had it. I don’t like using that word at all, but that’s why I used it here. Because of how ugly it is.

I thought it was lack of attention. I learned it's an excess of attention + lack of regulation.

It's mostly thought of as school age boys who are getting into trouble a lot For me it's losing things, being messy, being distracted, having way more ideas than focus, being sensitive, intense, emotional, interrupting, reacting big to stuff, temper (in a quiet inward way)

Getting overwhelmed Finding it easy to do things I love and hard to manage basic chores and tasks

really really messed up, but as a kid I thought it was the excuse people came up with for little boys who keep interrupting and making noises in class while they're supposed to be working. as an adult? I realized that's part of it but also it's like being a mac in a PC world

a lot of things are the same, but some of the buttons you need to do stuff are in a different spot. some programs won't run at all. you've gotta get special versions of things you might already have because things are programmed just a little different between the two.

ADHD is a fundamental difficulty with constructing an image of the future. Need to turn down immediate dopamine bursts in favor of long-term goals? Nah, tomorrow doesn’t exist. Need to remember something you just heard for later? I’m sorry, for *what?*
-
That's completely *not* my experience at all. I've got no problem with constructing an image of the future. For me, ADHD is all about the present.
