    The latest Whakaari/White Island Volcanic Alert Bulletin is now on our website. We undertook visual observation and gas flights last week and confirm no further extrusions of lava has occurred. Gas fluxes are lower than two weeks ago but remain elevated.

    Peak acceleration from last night's Kapiti M5.4 quake at 72 stations. Light but long shaking (15 sec or so !), with peak shaking recorded in Picton (South Island) at 3% g.

    Our latest bulletin on Whakaari / . The presence of hot magma in near surface since the eruption and its interaction with shallow water cause some episodes of tremor and minor surface activity. quiet overall. Still no evidence of further magma on the rise.

    This is probably the first felt earthquake in New Zealand in 2020 - only probably because there is a single MMIII felt report from Kawerau, where I suspect it was only just perceptible. ML 1.7, 06:42, 3 January 2020, 20km SW of Whakatane Recorded: NZ_EDRZ, short period
