It’s out! Advance online version of our boredom theory paper now up at PsychReview. Summary version: boredom signals deficits of attention and meaning.

Also, 'ideological diversity' is a perversion of the concept and its mission. That conservative white men, whose views have been privileged since forever and whose ideas are infused throughout social science theory, could feel that their perspective is not represented is absurd

    B) Until I took this job, I didn't realize how pernicious network effects are. If I contacted the first people who came to mind, my advisors/reviewers would be exclusively older white men. Attending to diversity gets you a broader, superior talent pool.

Having worked with ocelots in Bolivia, I can attest they are BADASS. Size doesn't matter.

I'm looking to get caught up on the goals and motivation literature. What, in your opinion, are the most important theoretical papers from the last decade or so?

before my first year talk at uva, a post-doc in our department told me she always drinks something with caffeine before a big talk -- that way she can attribute the rapid heart rate and nervous feeling to the coffee instead of something internal. i still do this.

Yet when our "meritocratic" systems produce disproportionately white/male outcome, few bat an eye. And those of us who dare to suggest those systems are broken/biased are called "ideologues" pushing "agendas." Only when a system benefits the disadvantaged is it called unfair.

“By tracking the evolution of political language in the US & other Western nations, we show that the changes in nationalism and national identity in the 1920s..are linked to the present day in the form of a political discourse which emphasizes group identity over rule- following”

Let me know if there are questions I should add or remove from the list! Programs differ in their recruitment event. It can be stressful, but don’t treat other candidates as competition. Tend-and-befriend is a better strategy (and grad students will gossip if you’re being an ass)

Grad school interview season is upon us. My former students and I prepared this list of potential interview questions (and some tips), primarily for social psych PhD programs in US. I hope this helps! Good luck! Link:

This is a particularly important point (read the full thread for context). People from marginalised groups often find themselves in situations where not only are they treated unfairly, they are also not accorded the social credibility to dispute that unfairness.
