    that's funny you say that...It was my first thought cuz there was some box-like striation in some of the balls. but, they don't all have them, so I went algae. thanks for the thought.

    I've seen snotballs like this, some quite green too - hard to say if this is the same thing but mine were colonies of ciliates (I think) full of symbiotic algae.

    Openstax Biology has some decent ecology chapters. Definitely intro level.
