This is the downtown street functioning as a racetrack where yet another person was slaughtered. There's no reason to have more than 1 thru lane of car traffic on RVA's Main Street.

Timing on Boulevard actively encourages speeding. If you drive 25mph you WILL stop at every light but if you go 45 you breeze through

The city touts retiming as a safety measure, but it’s application so far has been to move as many cars as possible. The intersection is in a 4 block stretch between signals and after a string of downhill green lights. Retime for a lower progression speed. nacto.org/publication/tr

Was a time when Micron built chips in Idaho and not in China. We are leveraging our security to maximize profits.

If you having been paying attention, in recent weeks, China has - sanctioned Lockheed Martin and Raytheon - begun a probe of Micron and Bain & Co. - raided the due diligence firm Mintz Group and arrested some of its staff - detained 17 Japanese businessmen and

Person driving SUV at high speeds in the middle of the city lost control, killed a person on the sidewalk and destroyed a solid concrete wall. Tell me again we don't need to remove these one way highways from every city that have caused two deaths within blocks.

Note that in George Orwell's 1984, tv and movies for the proles were cranked out by machines. They may be able to generate the pablum they normally try to create anyway, but genuine art will be out of reach.

Multiple studios are exploring using AI to generate scripts based on books and other public domain IP. The studios reportedly plan to hire writers to rewrite those AI scripts when the writers’ strike ends. (Source: abovetheline.com/2023/05/04/ai-)

A few of our masonry envelopes. Note that these are already architecture. The goal is to create a vernacular fabric that lives many lives. At any point these bldgs can be reduced back to this distillate state with no loss of identity or cultural significance to their region.

Far too often, our cities prioritize the convenience of motor vehicles over the safety of people walking and biking.
Quote Tweet
I talked to a city traffic engineer and it turns out one of the reasons we don’t have real protected bike lanes is because drivers don’t like it when they hit concrete barriers and damage their cars so cyclists are left with plastic sticks and paint for protection.

The way Amtrak prices trains, it's competing with flying. The way The Netherlands prices trains, it's competing with driving.

Replying to @WarrenJWells
Dutch Railway pricing, advance ticket from Rotterdam to Amsterdam (any departure): 1 minute: €17,90 1 day: €17,90 2 days: €17,90 3 days: €17,90 1 week: €17,90 2 weeks: €17,90 4 weeks: €17,90 8 weeks: €17,90 (not saying this is ideal, but it's predictable)

I think nobody really grasps the consequences of being unable in ~90% of the developed world to buy a piece of land and build whatever you want on it without asking anyone for permission. The barriers that exist for home construction are financially and logistically prohibitive.

Stick to talking about the game. Long live the King.

Not the best video but the Kop were signing: "You can shove your coronation up your arse", last night. Spending tens of millions to put a hat on an old man is obscene and could be used to help so many in this disgrace of a country #LFC

When you are knowlegeable about a subject, you can see how journalists consistently get not just the details, but the main substance of stories they write colossally wrong. Why would you then trust them to be right about everything else.

Another high-profile review of MacIntyre's philosophy that simply gets a number of his philosophical positions wrong. Do I bother to explain how and why? Or do I Ieave this journalism claiming a teacherly role for its readers to its own confusions? thenation.com/article/societ

Before and after in Farringdon, London A 1970s office is retrofitted, I think superbly, with a brass cladding that fits with the geometry of neighbouring buildings The new facade makes it a much more pleasant walk at street level and makes the building a better neighbour
