Texans: would it be fair to say you can think of a michelada as a beer cocktail, whereas a chelada, its close cousin, is a dressed or seasoned beer? cc

🧵🧵For years, Jared Woodfill has led extreme anti-gay campaigns in Texas, comparing LGBTQ people to child molesters. And for years, he's known of child sex abuse claims against his longtime law partner and Southern Baptist leader Paul Pressler.

I am at a loss for words here. I'll try... This is a tragedy—for the staff, for readers, for anyone who cares about independent journalism, for everyone at TO who put blood, sweet, and tears into the place.

The @TexasObserver, a storied liberal magazine, is shutting down and laying off its 17-person staff after a 68-year run marked by feisty, combative and often humorous investigative work from a stable of renowned journalists. bit.ly/42INJVd

To emphasize: the Citizen eco-drives are just awesome. They look good, the engineering is 💯, they’re low-maintenance, they work with anything… What I find really controversial: Fossil watches. What’s the point?

My take: A $3k watch maintains its utility, holds value, doesn’t go out of style, can be handed down (like jewelry) and says more about the wearer’s taste than their income That said, if you want a great watch in the $200 range, I love the Citizen eco-drive. Good watch. twitter.com/ModeledBehavio…

Feel like I need to speak out on the $3k watch controversy. I am not anti luxury. I am against normal people convincing themselves a luxury is a necessity, and spending a significant percent of their income on it.

! This could have been an amazing story about religious belief and communities—Sanderson clearly showed the journalist how both inform his writing, as well as explicitly engaging with those questions

I had plans today but am tempted to spend all day catching up on this conversation instead The more I read the profile, the more intrigued I am by the subject, and the more baffled by the journalist’s insistence that the subject isn’t interesting

Meet Brandon Sanderson. Brandon published two books in the time it took our writer to finish this story. Brandon's fantasy writing made him $55 million last year. Brandon doesn't think he's a very good writer. 📷: Michael Friberg | wired.trib.al/MqIiXr3

What’s the problem? Like pornography, you know it when you see it. He doesn’t look comfortable in his skin. His laugh seems creepy. These criticisms may seem superficial, but just ask Kamala Harris how politically damaging such perceptions can be. thedailybeast.com/right-now-ron-

Also, he seems totally interesting? Anyway, I’m going to read one of Sanderson’s books—which would y’all recommend, to start?

This guy Brandon Sanderson sounds very nice and it’s cool that he’s achieved so much success both commercially and in finding an appreciative audience twitter.com/wired/status/1…
