Why are academic groups forwarding "preprints" that are not posted directly to the media without the biomedical community having a chance to review? Isn't a preprint enough? is this a new pre-pre-print trend? Concerning.

What's the R value of pre-pre prints? Very concerning trend. No proof yet but bears watching.

Wondered if preprints might degenerate into "fake-news" of the science variety. Perhaps policies from @medrxivpreprint & @biorxivpreprint would bar submission to preprint servers if first reported in the news? Sort of an embargo policy?

But if not on a preprint server, is it really a preprint? Or is it just a collection of thoughts compiled into a PDF and sent to a journalist?

To be fair, I convinced them to let me write about it so that readers could see both lines of evidence at once. And everyone I quoted saw the manuscript and thought it looked legit. It should be out soon! (It’s been submitted)

Ok, but the CA variant preprint reported as “the devil is here” has yet to be posted. Your reporting was flanked by a posted preprint by CalTech which helps. I think science journalists need to set a high bar as to what warrants pre-pre-print, especially when it can be alarming
