How can a country that has required you to take your shoes off at airport security for a 2001 foiled attempt without a single person hurt ...... be the same one that has no systematic plan to address >73,000 Americans dead, >1.2 million confirmed cases?

This is something I've come back to repeatedly in interviews this week, Eric. We need *volition* to take a threat seriously. Malice draws disproportionate response; random chance is ignored. To be fair deterrence plays a role. But it doesn't explain the massive asymmetry.

Weirdly a successful political effort to invent a false origin story (as a means of blaming another country) would have resulted in greater mobilization of resources than we’re seeing. We have tremendous capacity to accept natural disasters and leave our stewards off the hook.

We are also politically and culturally incapable of executing a sophisticated response to a pandemic. Therefore, we are de facto adopting a Sweden-lite model and _NOT_ a S. Korean one.https://twitter.com/BolognaFishMD/status/1235423159291019265?s=20 …

We are not psychologically, technologically, logistically, organizationally, materially, prepared. We have not tested, implemented NPIs, learned from China, or learned from history. We continue to be reactive to an exponential threat. We're doomed. Hope I'm wrong. God help us.

Careful, this tweet could backfire with @realDonaldTrump deciding to end security screenings at airports because they infringe on our #american rights.

They're largely security theater anyway. Not only does the TSA routinely fail penetration tests, but they are unable to point to any plot this has actually thwarted.

Because President kicked out team w/15y working experience under 2 D/R Presidents and instead started from scratch w/son-in-law real estate mogul new expert on pandemics?

Trump is a good one word answer. It speaks to agency, and implies a certain motive. But I think you need to explicate the motive part more to get a real answer. Why Trump? What is the end game? It is a fearful question that demands, but does not often get, a dreadful answer.
