Assuming human body is a cylinder and ignore density variation among people, BMI indicates the ratio of cross-sectional area to height, which makes sense to me as a first order approximation.

In aircraft design this type of regression is common. The weight can be considered density x volume (d^3)...so density x height is the real regression. I also believe its meaningless for anyone beyond normal. In the 80s obesity was rare until Dominos. LOL
Using BMI at the individual level seems so lazy & unhelpful to me...
Which is why Rate of Change of BMI is a supplementary indicator to be determined- Increase or Decrease. Also, Body Fat % to complement what the 2 dimensional BMI provides. In #Ayurveda, 'Samhanana' or the quality of being stocky notwithstanding BMI indicates an healthy(ier) one.
