The primary alternative is some form of Feudalism. Indeed, voters in the European democracies have been gradually voting themselves into serfdom for 4 decades now. The new feudal lord is an all-powerful nanny-state government. This too relies on the consent of the serfs.

I think that’s because today’s losers can be tomorrow’s winners. I’ve got a friend who was making about $50K/yr, had tons of business debt, and figured out how to build a better mousetrap per se. She now grosses about $6 million a year.
