Mason’s insight raises an interesting question: Why don’t we acknowledge this as applicable everywhere? We have folks in all walks of life who need their first big break. Why do we not build ways to get VC thinking financially rewarded everywhere it’s needed beyond startup firms?

This is what VC has become, but we don't have good contracts that allows risk at that scale, so we get lots and lots of distortion.
Because it's a patronage system. Who gets to choose who is worth believing in? How many just fall through the cracks because no wealthy patron decided to invest in them?
