You got some strong evidence to back up this hypothetical? I'm just not buying this hot take. How is the image that you capped represent a slippery slope to hating biology? This seems really far-fetched.

They don't want no "harmony" bias; they are selling a predatory view.
-
I read the Blank Slate, and in a sense, the whole idea is a strawman argument. No-one, at least no SCIENTIST ever believed that sweetness and light stuff, that was just that one aunt we all have
-
but I swear to God, this "biology" argument is coming from the church, and the opposite of this "harmony" strawman is their "original sin"

That's a great way to put it. Although I'd say love and respect aren't mutually exclusive. I think our ancestors both respected and loved nature. And also feared nature (rightly so).
-
Yep. I took my kids fishing from the bank of a large river today. The potential for catching blue cat was never separate from the snakiness of the location. This didn’t offset the quiet, remote harmony the day held.
-
let's at least briefly meantion that erich weinstein isn't even able to engage with the climate science denial of his intellectual dark web buddies. yet he demands that we have to be more honest with our kids ... weird innit? shouldn't he start with this honesty with his friends?
-
I wasn’t aware that he was demanding anything. Or of what he has/hasn’t spoken to whomever about. Or what his/various IDWers’ positions are on a great many complex issues. Regardless, how do you engage with your friends who disagree with your position on climate?

Its probably more that less people grow up around nature and farming. You live close to nature or animals on a farm and you quickly learn how beautiful nature/biology is but also how brutal it can be.
-
I think you are probably right. As someone who has known farms. There is a serious disconnect between the field and the grocery store.

This reminds me of an argument by
@RichardDawkins against making science appeal to young people by only emphasising the FUN easy fast cool exploding robotic fair-level stuff. As opposed to sharing how fulfilling and valuable hard scientific work can be. - 1 more reply

You lost me a bit. Is this another one of those 'PC Sucks' jabs?

I think it might be against transgenderism??

Hey
@EricRWeinstein, do you have any advice on how to teach kids about the nature of uhhhh nature, that doesn’t completely terrify them? Maybe a YouTube video on your channel? would be awesome. -
I'm not Eric, obviously, but I'd like to suggest PBS Eons on YouTube. It's a series of videos about evolution (dinosaurs!) and paleontology. Too complex for small children, but if your kids are already in the age when they get interested in dinosaurs, go for it :)

"Teach children to respect nature as kids & they won’t need to fear biology as adults. Teach them only to “love” nature & they later come to hate biology." Not sure I understand what you're getting at here Eric. Care to extrapolate?
-
Pardon the intrusion, but I think he's meaning that teaching to "love" may be ideologically loaded and morally pseudo-superior, so that kids would rebel against that. You know, you rebel against condescending, guilt-driven moral impositions. Teaching respect is different
-
That's an incredible amount of specific information to extrapolate from such a generic and vague original statement!
Or was his tweet a continuation of another conversation/thought from elsewhere?
