This denial is ominous. Google regularly biases search in countless political ways (Anti-gun, anti-extremist, pro-multiculturalism, etc...) according to many experiments I‘ve run and does so in a fashion that is so transparently obvious as to be comical. https://twitter.com/ericrweinstein/status/968887623635779585?s=21 …pic.twitter.com/Ol5MDMo1r4

I should say that the fact that my political agenda is generally (though not always) aligned with @Google’s gives me zero comfort here. Google should not be suggesting to us that they never bias search away from giving a user what he or she seeks.

serious question: is it your search settings that is causing this? At least for me, when using a cleared cache, I seem to get an infinite number of guns (including with "safe search" on) with all sorts of search terms. Do you have a summary of your "methods" for assessing bias?

This was Google changing a setting months ago. It inadvertently exposed that they were down-regulating guns in one division. Naturally they changed it as it was ridiculed. My ‘methods’ are posted as pictures. They actually wouldn’t let you shop for a shotgun microphone.

1/ From gun control to mind control. Tried locating *non-gun* products on @Google yesterday with "guns" in the name. Glue guns? Gone. Pistol Annies?? Nope. Soldering Guns??? Gone. Shotgun Microphones???? Forget about it. Poof! With a flick of a switch. That's insane. pic.twitter.com/379HYlFlMl

The search you provided was through a proxy out with tracking provisions on it. Hence the missing time lapse. Try again

wut. I found a thing with a search today so that means the fact that you didn't find a thing 6 months ago isn't true. Very confusing line of argumentation.

I'm curious. Is your indifference to the matter because you're in favor of the biases they choose?

It's a free* internet app. I go back and forth, Google v Bing. Neither owes me anything. Google usually finds what I'm after. No, I don't know what they don't show me. I don't rely on any one source, use Google, Bing, TV, news papers (NYT, WashPo), etc. *you give up some privacy

Appreciate the response, and it's a fair one. Most people don't see it this way. I agree. Although the natural restrictions on these practices are those imposed by societal outrage. I say let people highlight these behaviors as much as they please. A necessary check & balance.

Even 'if' Google and Bing have serious flaws, biases, the time they save for 90% of users is worth a fortune. Not counting the education value. I haven't used my library card in months. I was a weekly user. Not now.

Paul, libraries don't "owe" you anything either, so would you be in favor of one that hides (or gets rid of) books it doesn't want you to see?

Would be interesting to set up automated tests with a number of politically charged search times designed to detect algorithmic shifts. Similar to what you did with your manual searches except run frequently
