Our top intellectual community stalled out >40 years ago: some of my thoughts on why (beyond the clickbait title).

  2. Happy Birthday America. Warts & all, you still look pretty great to me this July 4th at nearly 250. This was the most American thing I could think of: A US Western TV theme, played on a Portuguese instrument brought by immigrants and adopted by Hawaiians as if it was their own.

Hey Ben. Given our nuanced private conversations, I just don’t get this one. Do you mean “more people are rich thanks to capitalism” or “we are rich as a nation thanks to capitalism” or something else? Because “everybody’s rich” seems both weirdly invidious & obviously wrong.

Ben & I disagree about a lot. It doesn’t sound anything like this. I remember sitting in Bill’s audience looking at a flashing applause sign overhead, while being instructed by a warm-up comedian as to how to react. It left me thinking about the crushingly high cost of success.

I smell dyslexia, ADHD, or some such “learning disability” all over this story. Super high agency. High creativity. Can’t fit in. Some blood on his hands but unexpectedly little considering his “line of work.” Can’t fit in to society. This guy may need a prison STEM PhD program.

Enjoyed talking to & immensely over on Dave Rubin’s show. I feel very fortunate have these guys as partners to look for a way out of our current civic mess. Hope people see how much we can disagree & just how little that involves epithet.

Note: I wrote PST out of habit when I meant PT. I perhaps should have used PDT or Pacific Time. Sorry for my error.

In "Lost in Math", has written a necessary book that I've always hoped someone would never write. It lays out the argument that "Beauty" is a dangerous Siren for physics, which is almost always true. Except, unfairly, for a tiny top tier. Beauty, it seems, loathes equity.

[looking at replies taking me literally] Obviously I’m being sarcastic about time left in the administration as I thought there was enough time to vote on Obama’s replacement of Garland for Scalia. I’m even sure McConnell will agree w me if it again happens late in Trump’s admin.

פּאַסקודניאַקעס gonna make פּאַסקודסטװע... “The senate stands ready to fulfill its constitutional role...to fill this vacancy.” This tweet is perfect in the self-betrayal of its author. Are you quite sure there is enough time left in this administration Senator McConnell?

So. The Mobster-of-Lobster is boldly stepping over the 49th parallel trying to enforce his version of Canadian monogamy on the American People? Glad to hear it. Join us, won’t you? Should be fun. Thanks to and host for the invite.

Civility is a tool. I agree w/ that offering civility & reason when others are chasing utopian fever dreams w/ outrage is powerful. But I will not wed myself to civility. If one announces that the proper place for a sword is in its sheath, rattling it has no power.

Disagree. Civility is important precisely b/c of the importance of incivility when it finally comes from civil people. I once asked my 90+ YO Grandpa why he hated profanity. “I don’t” he said. “But you NEVER use it with me!” I replied. “Ah. But when I finally do? You’ll listen!”

Just spent two weeks out of the US mostly ignoring the news to focus on family, science & wondrous Italian achievements of old with our kids. 3 people I trust have issued similar warnings: be careful tweeting about most anything, as the US changed again while you were away.

Almost 40 years ago “the Spandrels of San Marco” (curvilinear triangle being pointed at) were used as a device by Stephen Jay Gould & Richard Lewinton to upend SocioBiology for (largely) political reasons. If you’re in Venice Sun., June 24th eve, & might want to discuss, DM me.
