My fifth grader just got this question on zoom: The Rocky mountains are more ____ than the Appalachian mountains. a) Snowy b) Rugged c) Dry d) Fertile Clearly it's not 'c' or 'd'. But can we discuss the first two? How can there be only one answer?

They make beer there so b) rugged final answer also "The peaks of the Rocky Mountains are higher and more jagged than the peaks of the Appalachian Mountains because: ... the Appalachians have been worn down by rain, ice, and wind over time."

You're right - this is probably what they want! BUT... do people regularly ski in the Appalachians? Surely the Rockies are also more snowy?

Annual average snowfall in the region can range from less than 10 cm in the southeast foothills to over 98 inches in high-elevation Rockies get about 56 inches a year

This is VERY interesting. Thank you! Can I be pedantic? Is it possible that the Rockies are still more 'snowy' because they keep the snow longer? (because of altitude and said ruggedness)

No you can not be pedantic...second time in my life I had to look up that word lol The 4 choices are describing characteristics not measurable elements. Even if it snowed 1 inch you could describe a place as snowy and it would be the same as a place with 1000 inches of snow
