Actually, Tim Kaine is right. The United States was the first representative democracy with a constitution that codified slavery in a legal system. Slavery existed long before America, but the Founding Fathers had the audacity to declare the enslaved as 3/5 of a human being.
Legal slavery still exists in the US but now it's controlled by the department of corrections and they are called prisoners. Not to mention all the people that are imported under visa programs and used and abused in illegal slavery that no one will ever know about.
