I promise I'm not trying to provoke you, but may I ask why you hate the term Hispanic? I'm from the South Bronx and have many close friends who are Latino and I've never heard that before. I mean no offense and I don't consider you obligated to answer.

"OMB defines "Hispanic or Latino" as a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race." To me it's like a catch all term that doesn't really say anything about me.

I've heard that black is preferred, but I'm not really qualified to answer.

I, too, hate the term Hispanic. Coined during the Nixon era by Mexican-American Grace Flores Hughes. It sounds like a mashup of “his” and “panic”. I used to say Chicana in the 70s. Now I prefer Latina.

My friend prefers "black", but I think it's a personal preference thing. I never asked why. Maybe I should do that.

The more you ask the more you know.

I accept both terms. I personally don't know anyone that would be offended by either but I can't speak for all.
