Things started polarizing under Reagan, as I remember it. It has definitely reached a crescendo. Or nadir.
So before Trump did Democrats and Republicans hate each other as much as they do now? Or has it always been the extremes hating each other? Or have both parties always been oil and water?

There was a long time where the parties were largely thought to be aligned on most issues except for the big 3 that government shouldn't be involved in anyway: 1. Abortion, 2. Murder in the form of Capital Punishment and 2. Christianity in secular spaces.

And to clarify, many of those attacks were on fellow Republicans. His attacks coincided with the outward push to more extreme positions
