I don't make masks for a living or know much about anything, but how the hell does it take that long?

Surgical-style masks can be made more quickly. Nobody much bothers to make a distinction between that kind (which offers little protection but is better than nothing) and an N-95 respirator (which looks like a mask). That’s unfortunate.

There’s also full-face respirators which integrates eye and respiratory protection (think of them as a civilized version of the MOPP-IV you surely remember).
