What has happened to turning salt water from the ocean into drinkable water? I've read they do it on submarines. Wouldn't that be a smart thing to harness?

Yes it would be but the energy required makes it too expensive. So I would propose to combine it with increased green energy so it's carbon free clean water.

But, CA taxpayers should pay for what % of irrigation for water-intensive crops (pistachios, almonds?) that are largely exported for considerable profit to growers who can be sizable corps? To a non-expert, it’s complicated issue.
-
It's even complicated for experts because it is still an issue and it's only getting worse.

38years in Cali produce.Mother Nature has final word on fruit/veg bounty or lack of in grow cycle. But we are spoiled and want when we want, then angered and uninformed when natural events affect quality/supplies.All produce should be appreciated as a gift.

It amazes me that a coastal state on a planet whose surface is 70% water can be in a drought.Israel found a way to cost effectively desalinate water. Y can’t we? Israel has machines that literally retrieve water from the atmosphere. Y don’t we?
-
I can only guess but either way I would like to change it.
