Unless you have money or connections you may never get on the ballot. Then to win it takes an average of 1.5 million dollars. CA has a filling fee which is $1,740. If not for that I would never get 2k signatures. Saving that much hurts on a fixed income. Some may never b able to.
Of the people, by the people and for the people does not really describe our system if so many may never even have a chance to get on the ballot. We need fair elections then maybe we can have fair laws.
Thanks for shedding light on this particular issue! Most people I know who are well qualified to run for and hold public office do not readily have $1.5 million. How would you propose making elections more fair?
Every candidate gets a specific amount of money to campaign. No donations no personal contributions. Rich or poor it will not matter. So people have to run off of their merits, accomplishments or anything but money.
