Devin's family farm uses undocumented laborers as do the majority of farms in Devin's district so they can be underpaid and screwed over. That's hardly looking after your own.

A lot of family farms are gone in the east. Many people still keep them going as weekend hobby farms because they like the life so much. Financial goal is to break even. Obviously not dairies. That's full time.

Chapter 12 is a last ditch effort to avoid foreclosure. But I would assume big companies buyout smaller ones once they go under. Probably the same big companies that took their share of the 28 billion dollar bailout which smaller farmers did not get a piece of.
