    Ran into a friend tonight who lives In Vieques, PR, and he still doesn't have power. Family has had to scatter to get jobs to pay bills. It's outrageous, certainly a scandal if not criminal.

    Agreed. Why resist simple ideas for making restaurants more hospitable?

    This cocktail-menus-for-all controversy is really baffling. A) restaurants make a huge margin on each cocktail, much higher than on food, and B) there are always more dessert menus per capita than anyone needs. Switch the algorithm on those two and you'll be golden.

    Bordeaux is a red blend. So, often, are Châteauneuf and Chianti. Nothing new, except as a marketing term now for popular, mass-produced, often sweetly fruity supermarket wines.

    The disillusionment must be devastating.

    How is it that I spent all these years convincing myself that Cadbury is vastly superior to Hershey's? I mean, it's better, but objectively they both suck. (I'm talking plain milk chocolate here.)

    Sorry to hear. Loved the books.

    Philip Kerr's crime novels about the Nazi-era detective Bernie Gunther are among the best in the genre and will put you in mind of Chandler's Marlowe. Kerr has died and left behind one last Gunther novel

    Not only in love with where they live, but with what they grow.

    One of the most extraordinary things about European winemakers is that they are virtually always in love with the place where they live and make wine, and can generally not conceive of wanting to make wine anywhere else. (I feel the same way myself.)
