Starting a new series called "Tor Facts" where I factcheck Tor's claim of independence from the U.S. government. It's based on FOIA docs that I wrestled form the BBG in the course of writing Surveillance Valley. The first "factcheck" should be dropping soon...pic.twitter.com/9UR8sAQ8yp

Today, I am releasing my full cache of FOIA files on Tor and the BBG to the public. They show collaboration between the federal government, the Tor Project and key members of the privacy and Internet Freedom movement on a level that is hard to believe.https://surveillancevalley.com/blog/fact-checking-the-tor-projects-government-ties …

This is the first in what will be a series of "Tor fact-checks." First up: Tor privately tips off the federal government to security vulnerabilities.https://surveillancevalley.com/blog/claim-tor-does-not-provide-backdoors-to-the-u-s-government …

If you support independent journalism that actually goes after power and attempts to help people understand the world, rather than obfuscate it — buy my book:https://www.amazon.com/Surveillance-Valley-Military-History-Internet/dp/1610398025/ …

I couldn't respond in a tweet, so I wrote my comments in a blogpost: http://blog.erratasec.com/2018/03/askrob-does-tor-let-government-peek-at.html … The most important comment is that the "secret" details were already widely public. Also, it was a feature request from the donor, not a vuln.

Thanks for the writeup Rob. Yasha, what is your response? Rob's rebuttal makes your article look quite sensationalist (misleading, even).

No, it sidesteps the central question by holding that VOA's USGov sponsorship is neutral and beneficent and stays in the technology weeds as obfuscation. Yes, VOA is run by agencies informed by US IC and that data path is bidirectional. Obviously.pic.twitter.com/7DDm0s98E9

BBG's goal is to subvert other countries' politics, and finding ways for other countries to be incapable of implementing Tor/VPN bans is part of that.

Which FBI used, at a University ten years ago by my recall, telling one professor he and one other person on that campus used TOR. Ever since then, it's on us (we've been warned).
