English Radical History Retweeted Cotton Famine Poetry

In the midst of the American Civil War in December 1862, Lancashire mill workers put their principles ahead of their immediate economic interests by refusing to touch raw cotton picked by American slaves. Abraham Lincoln thanked them for their act of "sublime Christian heroism."https://twitter.com/CottonPoetry/status/1189934519891243008 …

Well, it's quite a bit more complicated than that. Lancashire workers and mill owners lived off American slave-grown cotton long after the British abolition of 1833. The Civil War led to a cotton blockade in 1861. The sacrifice was a fait accompli.

We Americand often forget the crucial role played by England, France, and- albeit for less moral reasons- Spain in defeating the confederacy.

People putting principles and beliefs before their economic interests. Yet today we are told "no one voted to make themselves poorer".

A statue of Lincoln stands just off Albert Square in Manchester commemorating the stand taken by the mill workers. I think the base is inscribed with an excerpt from a letter of if thanks from Lincoln.
