Surely, then, the issue is with the right - under the domestic law of Bangladesh (and elsewhere) - to claim citizenship by descent? International law ensures a citizen isn't rendered stateless. If they have claim to two, it is legal to strip them of one.

You don't have to answer your work emails at the weekend. Labour's problem is that it is 20 years behind. They have this abstract idea of 'the worker' but are contemptuous of the real working class and their concerns.

Important piece from in Misconceptions on deradicalising people partly stem from the naive way radicalisation is talked about; often avoiding any sense of agency on the part of attackers, who are instead portrayed as vulnerable

However in the meantime the Government’s first duty is to public safety, and so I still agree with the decision to remove the citizenship of dual nationals that pose a threat. Aware this is controversial and uncontroversial depending on who you speak to. 4/4

Instead we should use this case as an oppertunity to reform our laws so that we can ensure justice is done at home. Should the Govt consult on new treason laws and the likelihood of a jury prosecuting? I think so. 3/4

I agree with et al that it is not ideal to make our home grown islamists the problem of other nations. And that stripping citizenship is not a long term solution. 2/4

Thread - on Shamima Begum: I seem to be alone in my view that SIAC would be right to reject her appeal and uphold the decision to strip her or her citizenship. SIAC have so far decided she was not rendered stateless by the decision. 1/4

The Special Immigration Appeals Commission, which hears national security cases, said that the 20-year-old could be stripped of her nationality because she had not been left stateless. SIAC said she could turn instead to Bangladesh for citizenship.

So in summary: Ms Begum has lost the preliminary legal argument that the UK had left her stateless (can't do that under international law). But whatever the outcome of an appeal on that, SIAC hasn't yet looked at the secret assessment about why she poses such a risk to the nation

Shamima Begum has lost her first appeal against the ruling to strip her of her citizenship. This is very good news that will help us prevent other high risk dual nationals from returning to the country they betrayed.

This is positive news, but also such a shame that free speech on university campuses has got so dire that the government feels the need to step in. Free speech is the bedrock of democracy and universities are hollow without it.

Notice that the two righteous morons either side of don’t even get that they’ve done anything wrong by shouting someone down for expressing views the majority of people agree with. This is why Labour lost a quarter of its MPs.
