Candlemas in the
#SouthSandwichIslands is continually#degassing through fumarolic emissions on Lucifer Hills. We made#multigas measurements of gas composition & collected gas samples for#carbonisotopes. Silicic lava flows preserve beautiful flow textures@ES_UCLpic.twitter.com/Hk44VZZ0fX

#SouthSandwichIslands are home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including the largest#penguin colonies known on Earth. Tens of thousands of individuals! These tough animals have survived & adapted to ongoing volcanic activity, including noxious gases and ash fall@ES_UCLpic.twitter.com/gPtkbWi5Tw

Sailing to the
#SouthSandwichIslands was a whole team effort, through rough seas and beautiful calm ocean. No day was ever the same! We worked on watches: 3 hrs on, 6 hrs off. I struggled with sea sickness throughout the expedition, but it hasn't put me off going to sea!@ES_UCLpic.twitter.com/t8p54JLKa0

Land ahoy! Back on dry land again after a month at sea exploring the incredible
#SouthSandwichIslands aboard the#PelagicAustralis. Over the next week, I'll be posting updates from our multi-discliplinary expedition combining volcanology, penguin ecology and glaciology@ES_UCLpic.twitter.com/wzjGhxSxxX

After a marathon 12 hr packing session yesterday,
@DrKieranWood and I are ready for our six week expedition to the#SouthSandwichIslands tomorrow... and my parents can get their front room back! Before/After photos show the chaos...#travellinglightpic.twitter.com/IUlw1BA0zr

The full length ABOVE and Beyond documentary (20 mins) was shown for the first time at the
#DeepCarbon2019 conference in Washington DC last week. A short two-minute trailer is available here: https://vimeo.com/369354180 Share widely! Let's get the world watching!Prikaži ovu nit -
New film! ABOVE and Beyond: Measuring volcanic emissions with drone technology https://youtu.be/H6xMlCrRJyc Zach Voss of Retroscope Media shows a stunning glimpse into the challenges, successes, and experiences of field research at the cutting edge of technology

Who managed to catch our
#DCOABOVE photo exhibit last week at#DeepCarb19?? All of the stunning images were taken and arranged by Matt Wordell. Feeling very nostalgic for the field! Our exhibit will be on display@carnegiescience until Jan 2020, kindly sponsored by L’Oreal-UNESCOpic.twitter.com/t8kMMRQ9mM

This melted my heart. I received an email from Imogen, a 9 yr old doing a homework project on careers, asking me lots of insightful questions. Today she sent me a poster showing the job advert she'd made for a volcanologist. New scientist in the making, perhaps?

Strong plume visible yesterday in
#Sentinel2 imagery, and throughout 2019. Hotspots occasionally visible in the crater (e.g. 30 July 2019) but usually too much ash to see in satellite imagery. Could potentially be suitable for FTIR under the right conditions?pic.twitter.com/zb3CeyliOD

Wow my name’s on the door... must be real now! Enjoying my new minimalist office

Volcanic gas plumes show periodic behaviour on timescales from seconds to years! Together with
@tompering &@TheVolcanofiles, we synthesise global observations and discuss mechanisms that generate periodicity. The paper is now available open access here: https://mdpi.com/531940 pic.twitter.com/rPqCWuicoI

I am beyond relieved to be reunited with this bag again! After being told by the airline I should give up hoping to ever see it again, it lands at my door this morning three weeks after vanishing en route home from Tanzania...

I'm delighted to be joining UCL in October as a Lecturer in Earth Sciences. Contract now signed, so finally seems real! As well as teaching, I'll be focusing on developing drone-based research strategies across the geological hazards. Cheers to the next adventure

Lava like no other! The crater floor of Ol Doinyo Lengai is continually resurfaced by ultra low viscosity natrocarbonatite lava flows. The lava hydrates on contact with air within hours, changing colour from black to grey/white in front of our eyes!

Drone-based observations are crucial at volcanoes where the scale of the features you want to measure is so large.
