As high tech as China is I’m baffled as to why they still hand out portable RF units with an over-ear speaker for people to listen to the live translation. Everyone has a smartphone. Why aren’t we using an app? Perhaps The @LinuxFoundation needs to launch a new project. #KubeCon

The existing tech is more practical? The alternatives are you count on people having offline translation, or being able to access wifi. And you'd have to give away head phones! Burden is then on the user.

Maybe it's cheaper and comes with the translation service?

I do suspect that the HW and translation services are a package deal. But watching the number of workers to support HW distribution and collection of the units (they make you leave a gov’t ID as a deposit) across 6 floors of a conference is a big undertaking. It does work however

That's a big operation. But probably necessary given the scale. The most I've experienced is a few Japanese language tracks in clustered in a small area, collect and return the devices when you enter/leave the rooms.
