Whenever someone says 'if your great-grandparents wouldn't recognise it as food, avoid it' I remember that one of my great-grandfathers, a butcher, used to take the fat he'd trimmed off meat before it was sold and just fry it for breakfast. Fat on toast.

I mean, I love fat on toast - in my case butter and cheese - but that's seldom what these people are thinking of.

(the other one had more normal breakfasts but he was a bigamist, so I'll take the fat)

My late father thought fried bread one of the finest everyday delicacies, along with Spam (fried again) and a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pudding. (It’s perhaps pertinent that his lateness is not the result of coronary issues.)

One of the highlights of the week when I was little was bread fried in the Sunday roast drippings. Beef, pork or chicken. Didn't matter.
