NEW: From Pam Kelley (@pamkelleyreads)... The fuzzy video the prosecution used to convict James Richardson for double murder was a lower-quality copy of the original. The DA knew that. Jurors didn’t. Did it lead to a wrongful conviction? theassemblync.com/long-form/jame

Caroline or Change (2004) with Tonya Pinkins. Important moments include Tonya’s raw emotion throughout and making sure the acting comes first bc it enhances the vocals either way, the slide at :20 and :43, and her vocal control during the intimate, soft moments. (4/11)

Rents are rising everywhere & those with the lowest incomes who were already struggling to pay rent are getting squeezed the most. Congress must invest in proven solutions – like rental assistance, public hsg, & Housing Trust Fund – to help more families. #HousingInvestmentsNow

This common form of consumer fraud is almost impossible for rental applicants to detect. Yet another reason why rental application fees should be prohibited.

Y’all. There are some property managers that are choosing a renter but still accepting applications and racking up fees. Rent too high & pickings are too slim to be playing w/ people & having them pay app fees when you know you aren’t giving them the place. 🤬

My latest for @TheAssemblyNC. Over the years, I've written a lot of higher ed stories. This is the only time I've had a college decline to give me its president's resume.theassemblync.com/long-form/disq

Richland County Library social workers have helped many residents apply for Emergency Rental Assistance & connect to other services during COVID-19, contributing hugely to the success of their ERA program. Learning about this was one of my favorite success stories of 2021!

Libraries have been a place people turn to for information to help them solve problems. Some of the complex issues that patrons may face go beyond what most librarians are trained to handle — and that's where social workers can fill in the gaps. n.pr/3FRrNeQ

ERA programs MUST provide direct-to-tenant assistance and housing stability services to prevent renters getting harmed when landlords act in bad faith.

Scene in online eviction court today: Landlord tells the judge,"She applied for the rent relief program. I haven't given the program the information they asked for.I don't want their money. Even if I got the money, I'd give it back." Judge granted landlord's request to evict her.

If cops need to be protected against a surge of COVID-19 so that they can throw people out of their homes and onto the street...maybe they shouldn't be throwing people out of their homes and onto the street?!? Congress must extend the federal eviction moratorium now.

If the Biden administration is not going to extend the eviction moratorium, they must take other steps - outlined here - to keep the 6.5 million renters behind on their rent safely housed. It's up to Congress now, and I urge my representatives here in NC to extend the moratorium.

There’s more the Biden administration can and should do - right now - to protect tenants from eviction when the moratorium expires this weekend. With #DeltaVariant surging, their action (or inaction) could be a matter of life & death. nlihc.org/sites/default/

The eviction moratorium has been extended 30 days, in addition to other crucial measures to ensure emergency rental assistance gets to those who urgently need it! As many states have been slow to disburse ERA funding, these protections are critical to keep renters housed.

🚨BREAKING: President Biden will extend federal eviction moratorium for 30 days & activate whole of government approach on eviction prevention/diversion, as we urged. Now we must redouble efforts to get ERA to tenants who need it to stay stably housed. twitter.com/dianeyentel/st…

Despite eviction moratorium, renters all over NC—especially black women—are still being kicked to the curb. “North Carolina has been at the back of the pack when it comes to stopping evictions,” says Legal Aid's Isaac Sturgill. #KnowYourRIGHTS #EndEviction
