That's dumb, I'm a software engineer and not only do I get that all the time, I also say it all the time to both men and women. Not once have I heard someone be offended by it. I do it because I;m excited, it means I've met yet another person with whom I share something.
If a woman tells you she’s a software engineer, don’t let the first words out of your mouth be “Oh, really?”
