Hey all - looks like the only open positions on the site right now are for Ph.D candidates but as soon as we get postings for other requirements or education levels I’ll share those out! Sorry for the confusion!

Shoutout to me for leaving my iPad on a flight. It’s now in someone’s home north of Stockholm 😫😭 Yes I did mark it as stolen. Yes I’m trying to erase all data. No I don’t have any hope of getting it back. Ugh.

Y'all saying this is clickbait, but the premise of clickbait is that it's misleading. If I've read the books and picked out the best tips and applied them to my career/life, how is sharing that knowledge clickbait? Some people want the tips but don't have the time to read.

Next year I want to give a conference talk along the lines of: "I've read 50 career/management/leadership/teamwork books. Here are the best things I've learned" Would this be interesting? Also leave your title recommendations in the replies below please :D

Hi yeah, no this book... I DO NOT recommend it. It started out strong talking about strategy but holy heck if you follow this you will destroy your credibility and trust with new team members. Horrifying.

"Move her out of the way: if she simply can't contribute productively or is disruptive or dispiriting influence, it is better to have her doing nothing than destroying value. Consider shrinking her responsibilities significantly. This also has the virtue of sending a strong signal to her about your view of her contributions, which may help he see that it would be best to move on"
Hold up, you're advising new managers to reduce the responsibility of low performing team members so they can't "destroy value", hopefully encouraging them to leave the team" just because you don't want to help them improve their performance and communicate areas for improvement?

Word to those looking to get into management: take the advice in popular management books with a grain of salt. Many are US-centric and won't be directly applicable in other countries. Also, I cannot get behind any book telling you to put your team through a JUDGEMENT TEST.

Second, the author suggests testing each person's judgement with a hypothetical situation. So you're asking me to put my new team members through a judgement test with a hypothetical situation? How is that going to do anything but destroy ANY trust they may have had in me?
"Ask individuals about a topic they're passionate about outside work. It could be politics or cooking or baseball; it doesn't matter. Challenge them to make predictions: 'who do you think is going to do better in the debate?' 'what does it take to bake a perfect souffle?' 'which team will win the game tonight?' Press them to commit themselves; unwillingness to go out on a limb is a warning sign in itself. Then probe why they think their predictions are correct. Does the rationale make sense? If possible, follow up to see what happens. What you're testing is a person's capacity to exercise expert judgement in a particular domain."

I understand sometimes you need to make personnel changes to improve the team performance, but coming in as a new manager and firing some team members instead of helping them improve performance? That's going to destroy trust with new team members.

I'm reading The First 90 Days and I'm horrified by some of the advice... First the author says that as a new manager you should come in and quickly assess the performance of your new team, so you can quickly remove the low-performers and bring in A-performers.

Decided to bring in all of the programming/career books I own to the office so we can create a library for the team. One of our team members is working on barcode image recognition that will print a QR label we can use to keep track of who has what. I love this 📚

My cat decided it was a great idea to spill my coffee all over my desk, soaking my keychron and audio interface. It was, in fact, not a good idea.

If you're an engineer who was laid off and you're looking for a new role, don't limit yourself to a specific job title in your search. There's no standard for eng job titles. One company's Director is another's Manager. One company's Staff Engineer is another's Senior Engineer.
