I was asked to write about it at several publications. One online publication, that seemed to have no vision or focus, asked me to write about ageism in food. I interviewed a lot of people. Turned in the piece. They wouldn't touch it.

I'd been asked by a friend to apply at the @washingtonpost before. I talked to someone, they said send your resume and clips. I did. Ghosted. My resume makes it pretty clear that I'd been in the job market a while.

And yet, despite all evidence that I was never going to get a job at the post, I applied again, to the food section and the editor got in touch to say: We'll be in touch! I discovered months later that they'd hired someone else. I tweeted about being dismissed. He wrote to say:

I lost all respect for him obviously. And blocked him, because I am too good for him! He can't see my tweets! And even though I'm old, I'm amazingly immature. And I put it behind me.

However, recently, in an idle moment (uh-oh) I noticed on the @WashPostLife twitter that they were tweeting about advice to aspiring journalistshttps://twitter.com/WashPostLife/status/1369662581514899461?s=20 …

I responded, as you can see in the tweet, pointing out that none of their new hires ever seemed to be over 40 and then asked them why their diversity stats didn't include age. I included their own pie charts.

I got no response, in spite of the fact that I asked them to respond, clearly. So, I e-mailed Cameron Barr, the managing editor. Obviously, I didn't expect a response, but I did think his assistant might forward me to the right people. No.

So I e-mailed their head of communications. I've e-mailed her three times now, including a follow up to give her a heads up that I planned to tweet about this. It seemed fair: to communicate. If you know what I mean.

I told her that I wanted to do a piece for another publication, which I do, even though the odds of that getting published are slim to none. Here is the letter I sent her Friday, yesterday, and today, which I followed up with a plea to be directed to the correct person.pic.twitter.com/ECaBxJgL1z

The moral of this story, esp. if you are a woman, especially if you are a single one: prepare to disappear. And after you do: you have to be sneaky, clever, scrappy, and creative to continue making a living in this business. It can be scary. You can do it. Leave this all behind.

And I would like everyone to note that even though I'm 60 I can outrun all of you, beat you at scrabble, rewire a lamp, and cook you under the table. And I'm still hot. Hahaha.

Thank you for this thread (been following some of these events here also). As a 57 year old film/TV critic and culture writer, I feel this ageism in journalism acutely.

I am 64, fwiw. I believe somehow aging women remind others of their mortality far more than aging men do.

Thanks for the thread @EmilyRNunn Clearly any news publishing organization would be LUCKY to have you. With the retirement crisis in the U.S. and hc costing on average $285k (out of pocket for couple) in retirement, it's not tenable. Keep this topic alive. Shame gets us nowhere.

This tweet has me thinking to double-down on FIRE goals. Soon to be 35, I feel I have to sprint to a financial finish line, not to bask on a beach, but to be prepared to only find slim-pickings in a market that doesn’t value me
