The school run is possible with kids on bikes on their own, but it absolutely requires very quiet streets and / or traffic free routes.

I cycle with my 6 year old to school, but on almost all roads he’s on the pavement. Road itself too dangerous - people doing 30+ in a 20 zone for example.
Big difference compared to when I lived in Copenhagen, there I’d see young kids safely cycling down the main road!

This doesn't always follow depending on age, experience and/or state of training, but the exceptions are exceptions where it should be the rule. At primary school at least the typical UK environment is such that only a few kids can be expected to ride there alone safely.

Have you considered the mother getting a child to school and then onto a job both required to arrive at the same time.

Very strange, apart from Cambridge, Oxford has always been a town full of cyclists.Bikes are everywhere.

No it doesn’t, rode every day with mine in Haringey was perfectly fine. I would never want to stop people from choosing which ever mode of transport the need or want to use.
