C and R, combined with diacritics (and don't get me started on diglyphs and triglyphs) are responsible for far too many sounds across all the languages that use them.

Yeah, you may already know, but Korean is among the languages with one character ㄹ akin to /r/ & /l/ and ㄱ,ㅋ,ㄲ for simple, aspirated, tense /k/ if indeed you’re talking a hard /c/ here!
