I gonna break with the trans orthodoxy here and say that the problem is not gender assignment at birth, which is overwhelmingly likely to be correct based on simple probabilities. The problem is coercive gender roles, expectations, and barriers to transition.

The issue is less, "oh this person was assumed to be a boy/girl" when that's gonna be 98ish percent correct anyhow. The issue is that that assignment preloads a whole bunch of norms and expectations that can be very toxic.

We don't need to be re-norming about assignment, we need to be re-norming about what it means to have assigned someone a gender identity, and re-evaluating what we do when one deviates from the cultural norms.

Do you think more fluid gender expectations would lead to less gender disphoria (Is that the correct term?)?

I don't think so. I was very gender fluid when I lived as a male--I often went out in public in skirts, etc--but if anything it intensified my dysphoria.

The issue I see is that TERFs use similar arguments to claim that being trans isn't valid by conflating gender roles with gender identity. Like, you could very well be right, but shitty people have already poisoned that discussion, so it's hard for us to speak with nuance.

I mean, I guess the larger question would be can one even be separated from the other? That is, can you separate being assigned a certain gender at birth from those roles and expectations? Or is the distinction between the two even important?

Because if we are to operate under the assertion that it is simply lack of access to transition and coercive gender roles, one could feasibly argue that a trans man can be happy if he was simply allowed to live as a butch woman, which we all know isn’t the case.

So I’m not sure we could say that’s really the crux of the issue here. It seems to be something more intrinsic than that, which I think can arguably be the assigning of gender at birth, but it could very easily not be that. It’s interesting to think about though.

(Also throwing a wrench in this is the fact trans/nb folk don’t all want or need to transition in any way. Making it all a bit more complicated.)

That and fight back when the assumption is wrong, re: transphobia, too. But yeah. Definitely.
