The issue is less, "oh this person was assumed to be a boy/girl" when that's gonna be 98ish percent correct anyhow. The issue is that that assignment preloads a whole bunch of norms and expectations that can be very toxic.

We don't need to be re-norming about assignment, we need to be re-norming about what it means to have assigned someone a gender identity, and re-evaluating what we do when one deviates from the cultural norms.

I agree. I don't think we have any idea yet how humans would divide themselves socially if not by external genitalia, given the option and an egalitarian system.
