Does the tech industry remember what ended the era of the Company Town the first time around? Armed. Militant. Organizing.

I am not advocating for that, of course. I am merely providing a historical lesson to the industry I love, an industry that prides itself on forgetting history.

It is a matter of my personal opinion, though, that of SV doesn't check its shit then it's truly risking others checking it for them.

Look at GOOG feeding and clothing its employees. I'm waiting for barracks to show up. Alternately, look at the situation with tech manufacturing in China with tech companies having dorms for employees surrounded by barbed wire.
-
There’s a difference with Chinese manufacturing workers though. The people who work manufacturing in China do so to save up their money and move on to other things, like getting more education and then a better job.
-
In other words, factory work is transitional for them. I don’t think that’s the case for a techie working at Google or Amazon.
-
The problem becomes that as a techie I have found it difficult to advance. I've only changed expertise a few times to stay competitive and keep my salary up, as the work I do becomes a commodity over time with lower salaries and outsourcing.
