By now you've heard that Jacob Goodwin, one of Deandre Harris's assailants, was found guilty of Malicious Wounding. The jury recommended a sentence of 10 years.

In Virginia, sentencing is done at a hearing, and the jury recommendation is a factor. The actual sentence can be shorter or longer. For this crime, the punishment is 5-20 years.

Goodwin's defense was peculiar. There were several self-contradictory statements made and the jury wasn't buying any of the arguments. The video was damning.

What is particularly interesting is that Tyler Davis, another man involved in his assault, was discovered and arrested and charged entirely due to the defense efforts on Goodwin's behalf.

Literally, the detective testified at Davis's prelim that he wasn't aware of Davis until Goodwin's lawyer pointed him out in Goodwin's prelim. Goodwin's lawyer asked "why not arrest that guy?" So they did.

Goodwin tried arguing self-defense. No one believed it. Self-defense requires a few elements: - that no other action could be taken - that the force used is proportional to the threat - that a person from their own perspective could reasonably deduce a threat
