So while we're talking Facebook a sec, I wanna tell a story about how Facebook helped facilitate my ongoing trauma post-August 2017.

Like most people, I used Facebook to keep in touch with friends, largely asynchronously. I rarely established friendships there, but would add people who I met through various other communities, such as the queer tech community, the activism community, or my hockey community.

I'm not exactly a hard-to-find person, but very few of my old friends use Twitter or follow me or know really a lot about what I've done.

In the weeks after what happened in Charlottesville in August, I did not receive a single call from any of my old friends asking if I was OK, checking in, seeing if there was anything they could do. Not one.

My mental health in those weeks was bad. Really bad. Acute trauma and anxiety and depression from the death of Heather Heyer to the grievous injuries of my friends to the ongoing legal saga was taking its toll. And then Spencer came back. And then I got swatted.

The only people coming to help were the same people who were in my boat: people stretched to their limits, pouring all their energy into caring for others instead of themselves, being the glue of the community. We were doing it all alone here. We still are.

Ultimately, the pain of not hearing from them was too great, so I removed them, effectively severing those ties.

And now, after those 6 months, I have but to wonder if they ever saw those pleas at all. Did they even know? Or did Facebook's algorithm decide to bury my posts and keep them away from their eyes?

I've been wondering a lot about this lately, and it's a big part of why I've decided to basically abandon Facebook as a way to stay in touch with people. It's just WAY too unreliable in terms of what you can count on people to see, and it's gotten a good bit worse over the years.

The timeline is fundamentally dishonest, and I hold any and all people who work at Facebook responsible for not being accountable for the inevitable damage this has done over the years, especially to people who depend on geographically diverse groups of friends.

I'm gonna go with the latter, because I miss *so much* on Facebook and *not* for the reasons I miss stuff on Twitter (i.e. bandwidth).

The amount of highly relevant (life-altering, -threatening, etc) content FB has buried or omitted from my feed stuns me.

I had a lot of posts like that in the period after the election - not to say I went through anything close to what you did, but it lasted probably a eyar. No one responded to the posts themselves but I'd hear whispers that, because of them, people were worried about me

I don't know what prevented people from actually reaching out in my case. I think it was that they thought I'd ask more of them than they were capable of giving, or maybe that I seemed fragile and they didn't want to break me? Or maybe I just didn't sound fun to be around

BTW the algorithm favor stuff ppl interact with often so ppl posting serious stuff and infrequent are buried.. I had to manually filter my feed so I see friends first and no cat content

While the FB algorithm may be to blame, it's just as likely people avoided the posts. FB is another social media device used to distract, insulate and sugar coat people's ordinary and often painfully boring lives. No time for honest human moments. /2¢

I hope you feel ok by now. I've felt in a similar boat for other reasons. That sucks, but i take it more as human limitation due to a self centered culture, a reflex to temper empathy rather than apathy, an exhausted lifestyle rather than laziness... Be well.
