Use whatever fits you best but let's stop pretending we're not retconning definitions and that somehow by doing so we are deeply advancing queer rights for what ends up being largely white, English-as-a-first-language populations.

We have invented a dozen new English language terms before even stopping to consider the status of gender minority rights in immigrant and non-English speaking/ESL populations even here in America.

it is hard to know what to do with the vocabulary-first crowd, this argument seems super strong but I dunno if people who don't think about poly-lingualism would be able to hear it
-
as far as I can tell monolingual people think words are basically magic and it is very hard to get em to back away from themselves for a second to realize the sounds they make don't necessarily correspond 1:1 to reality
-
Like the fact that I'm transgender in English and transsexuell in German. Words have a negotiated meaning, literal translations don't mean anything and meanings shift with needs and times...
-
one of the words for gender in French is "genre" which blew my mind, I think we'd understand it better in English if we used the same term a set of not-wholly-agreed-upon and largely arbitrary categories into which we slot things [or people] and over which we argue constantly
-
The German word Geschlecht both means gender and (noble) heritage, but in some rare cases it can mean genre as well.
-
I almost brought up Geschlecht because it's always confused me with the "schlecht" in there, thought it might in some way be to do with some notion of sin although obvs Sünde its own thing but apparently it's etymologically distinct from schlecht

Lots of people seem to see words as places to show off their collection of Greek and Latin bits, rather than as ways to communicate concepts to other beings

My girlfriend and I agree. The labels are fine, whatever helps you understand yourself, but the point of them is self-discovery and inclusion. I see them too often be used as some sort of purity test for divisive purposes.

More importantly, it's an affirmation by someone that the states beyond boy and girl are worthy of their love

I appreciate having explicit wording for “The gender binary is bullshit and my mating habits reflect my understanding of this”, tbh.
-
You're missing the point.
-
Nope. Not missing the point. I agree that we have big priorities as a community and many of them are MUCH more dire than wording. However, I think we can prioritize those things AND clearly express our identities.

I think that's where we should be, but right not it does serve to make many folks go "wait. What? There's something beyond boy or girl?"
