Can we talk about "unconscious bias" and "implicit bias" for a sec? Because it's coming up re: the Starbucks issue, and as this tweet points out, that's wrong.https://twitter.com/uppittynegress/status/985859261292056577 …

What does implicit bias training entail anyway? Is it a gameified version of an implicit bias test that rewards you for scoring better?
-
Mostly taking implicit bias tests and going "wow isn't that wild"

So it’s not like you get an electric shock for bias or anything. Or like you have to drink Koolaid mixed to taste better or worse based on your score.

We have not taken the next obvious steps after accepting that the bias exists: assuming all decisions from the biased are suspect until proven otherwise.

Is there a way for people involved in the interviewing process to detect harmful implicit bias? The goal being to strongly recommend against hires within a company that doesn’t place enough focus on bias detection.

Bonus points if the revealing answer also shows limited potential in things over which other biased persons would find the candidate undesirable. At this time, all I have to work with is the vibes I pick up. But that’s tough to convey.

It takes a significant effort to look at actions (personally or professionally) and to analyze them. To stop and say "Why am I feeling this way?" prior to making a step or decision. In the 70s we called it "consciousness raising." One is a happier person with less fear and anger.
