On Gab, the alt-right, which posts frequent calls for "race war now," has found itself attempting to inherit an anti-war platform re: Syria and has self-decided that they now occupy the moral high ground.

The alt-right supports Assad because they believe he fits their vision of an ethnic nationalist leader (also, they're anti-Jewish). But they say nothing of the struggle for Kurdish independence and self-governance, for instance.

The far right knows nothing about borders or how they were drawn or why. The fail to understand that borders are a completely synthetic concept. That reality is an insurmountable barrier in their belief system, which demands strong nationalism based on transcendant properties.

There is no coincidence that this version of the far-right is finding substantial support in the 35-and-under demographic. My generation knows a Europe with incredibly rigid borders compared to its history.

Far-right nationalism predicates itself on a logic based largely on the present status quo, which is not yet 30 years old, being something as if from divinity. When they confront this and find it breaks down on deeper inspection, what they come up with is disastrously convoluted

This exercise in interrogating the alt-right's logic, by the way, is incredibly useful for questioning your own intuitions about what borders and nations and laws actually mean and where they actually come from. The results may disquiet you.

The left: "I love the lower class and migrants, I'm so christ-like and good" Also the left: "I hate rednecks and I endorse using drone strikes in the homeland of migrants based on sketchy allegations, I'm so Christ-like" Don't bother throwing stones from a glass house.

I follow people from Chloe Adams, to Carl Benjamin, to Shaun King, to Ryan Faulk - find a wide range of input healthy. Yet, even among the people I know who literally take the label alt-right, I've never heard either of these things. Where do you stand on Syria btw?
