Self-driving cars aren't an ethical issue because of a trolley problem, they're an ethical issue because of the many and varied breeches to sociopolitical status quo they represent.

They represent the perfect capitalist mode: pure profit with no labor and no liability. They are an accelerant of monopolistic growth.

Was "the company" behind the controls of that car? If there was a human behind the controls, it is that persons fault. If there was no one behind the controls, who started the car and allowed it to self drive? Common sense people.
-
Please read any of the dozens of reports on this topic instead of just spouting "common sense." Like start here: https://works.bepress.com/curtis_karnow/9/download/ … Or here:http://www.abajournal.com/magazine/article/selfdriving_liability_highly_automated_vehicle …

Yes, I've read "dozens" of articles on this and even the two you mentioned do not conflict with what I said - if there is control surfaces available for human to use, then it is the humans responsibility as the "driver". Very simple, very common sense.
-
It is completely different thing when the cars autonomous system fails and that is something a "driver" (operator?) can't predict and only then becomes the software developer or part manufacturer responsibility into question.

Hadn’t thought about that part. One would think the company is liable exactly because there is no human involved in the accident.
-
Except the cities will foot the bill before they'd come anywhere close to threatening the partnership. They're already excusing the death on Uber's behalf.

This is a joke right
-
Liability is a function of law, which is something that people have to develop and write down and enforce, so not a joke

When you die it won't be a big deal either

"It's a big deal not* because..." - not "its not a big deal because..." Also, the suggestion of someone dying "not being a big deal" in some/any way (irrespective of how) is a bit insensitive. Clumsy tweet on all counts.

They're not actually safer, unless you're talking about on a closed track.

p.s. your tweet is grossly insensitive.

If I was a betting men I'd bet on Uber successfully shift the blame on the person at the wheel overseeing the car on this one As for Waymo's actually-driverless taxi service thing they're launching… that'll be interesting
-
It was her fault if she was crossing on a green light outside of the crosswalk. Pedestrians should follow laws and pay attention. Why is this the cars fault?
-
because it's also illegal to kill people, Karen
