Legit question: why isn't the NEA calling for a nationwide strike at this moment? What are unions if they do not exercise their power?

It's illegal for teachers in CT to strike, so my union probably can't openly advocate for it.

      Emily G added,

A few weeks ago, I asked why teachers weren't striking like the students were. Several people told me it was illegal so it'd never happen. Now: an "illegal" strike in WV, and a planned strike in OK, where it is "illegal" to plan such an action.

You were conflating political walkouts with labor strikes. Not the same thing, not the same rules.

Look, the distinction is fucking meaningless for this discussion. Unionized strike or not, the point was the answers I received were shown to be meaningless in light of recent events. That's it. That point holds regardless of what you call it.

Your pedantry is really just MRA "well-actually" in disguise. It bears no relevance to the discussion whatsoever. Call it a walkout, call it a strike, call it a spontaneous vacation for all I care, it doesn't actually matter, nor does the legal standing of any of those things.

Student walkouts are political protests. Union strikes are about a breakdown in negotiations between a union and management/the government. Where unions are involved strikes can't just be about whatever they feel like. 1/

So yes, if you're going to compare WV strikes to student walkouts, there are differences that matter.

And even if I was... it doesn't matter? The point is teachers should stop working until meaningful change is made: political, workplace safety, or however you want to frame it, regardless of the legality. You're just very proud that you know a distinction between things.

You're the one who used "illegal" to talk about WV when what people were talking about as illegal doesn't apply to that strike.
