"display notification [text]" will pop up a notification for you, so appending local tasks with ; display notification "Task done" will pop up an alert.

You can also use the "say" command if you'd like that to be spoken. If you choose one of the robot voices, it feels very retrofuturistic.

Hmmm. If you've got a touch bar mac I think you can wire up something with iterm2 shell integration. (The caps lock light used to be programmatically accessible, too...)

It's not the same, but appending "&& echo <bell>" is a rudimentary substitute. Just have to figure out the right escape sequence for the bell on BSD echo + your shell

blink(1) could do that, otherwise blink the display brightness to maximum when done, you’re more than likely to be in a darkish room right?
